The Power of Mindfulness
We are thinking beings. Our ability to think is what sets us apart from the animals. The truly beautiful thing, too, is that we can choose what to think about or not think about in any given moment; and here’s an interesting thought - we can choose whether to have an experience and think from there. We can have something happen to us and then have a thought about it, or we can choose to think a thought and then have an experience based on that thought. What if our thoughts had the power to create our reality? There are countless studies and experiences that say that this is true. Take the Secret Garden, as an example. I love this story because it highlights beautifully this concept of the power of our thoughts. There is a “sick” young man named Colin who has nothing to do with his time but think about how sick he is - that he is too weak to go outside, and that he will probably die before too much longer. And his constant experience was that of illness and depression. A good Dr. from London said that he might live “if he made up his mind to do it”. I always thought that was just an idiom but as I have studied more and had different experiences I realize that this is an actual fact that this Dr understood. We can see the truth of this as the story unfolds and Colin chooses to live, he chooses to be well, and he deliberately takes time in the morning to imagine himself well, walking, and living a full life. I love the beautiful imagery that we receive as the story progresses: he begins to walk, the sickly sallowness is replaced by beautiful and healthy fatness, and he stops being sick because he thinks of health. The story ends with this crippled, sickly boy literally running into the arms of his father, to the surprise and amazement of all.
This is not just a nice story, but truth. There have been many studies done with sophisticated machines that measure brain activity and energy in the room, that all show that this is true. People in our world have done similar, if not more miraculous things than what Colin did in The Secret Garden, and have healed from stage-four cancers, have brought in immense wealth when they were in financial ruin, walked when others told them they never would again walking, and the list goes on.
I believe in the power of the mind. I believe that there is a God in the Heavens after whose image we are created, and that this fact is the source of our power and ability to create and change our experiences. I believe that this power of our thoughts and imagination goes beyond just healing – it can lead to the curation of the best experience we can have in this life. The term “to manifest” means “readily perceived by the senses; easily understood or recognized by the mind”. Thus, when we are “manifesting”, we are taking things from our thoughts and bringing them into a reality that can be seen or understood by the senses; just like Colin imagining himself well and walking, and then actually doing it. If the word manifestation makes you uncomfortable you can use a different one, but we will be using it periodically with this definition in mind. Many who teach manifestation say that the power of manifestation comes as we connect to a higher spiritual power (God) and imagine with our intellectual mind, while feeling in our body the experience of having the thing that we want. Colin imagined himself walking; he felt the exhilaration of what it would be like, the wind in his hair, the pumping of his heart, and then he took action from that place.
I have developed a massage protocol, Mindfulness Massage, that aims to tap into this creative power of your thoughts, giving an opportunity for you to relax; connect to a higher, spiritual power; heal your body; and guide you through the process of building and creating an elevated experience for you in whatever way and capacity this looks like for you. It could be in health, relationships, money, etc.
